Catharina Bernhardine Kriege and John Schiller were married on 1 January 1855 in Franklin Co., Missouri. John Schiller (son of John H. Schiller and Elizabeth Stahlmann) was born on 20 May 1833 in Bavaria. He died on 24 July 1901 in Missouri. He was a farmer. John Schiller, the subject of this sketch, was born in Bavaria, Germany May 20, 1833, and is the son of John H. and Elizabeth (Stahlmann) Schiller, both natives of Bavaria. They immigrated to America in August, 1839, and in the spring of 1840 reached St. Louis, Mo. They removed the same spring to Franklin County, and located on the farm where our subject now resides, two miles west of Union, in Township 43, Range 1 West. The father was a farmer by occupation, and died in 1880. The mother died in 1869. To them were born five children, of whom John was the youngest. He grew to manhood on the farm, and secured but a limited education in attending the private and subscription schools, his attendance being only after he was fifteen years of age. He has followed farming as his life work, and now owns and cultivates a farm of 291 acres. During the late war he served as a home guard for a short time, and next was a member of the militia, and as such served throughout the war. He was elected justice of the peace of Union Township in 1880, and served until 1886. Mr. Schiller was married in 1855 to Diana Kriege, a native of Prussia, born December 18, 1834, and the daughter of Ernst and Elizabeth (Wehrs) Kriege, who were also natives of Prussia, and who immigrated to America in 1839. They located in Franklin County, Mo., where the father died in 1870, and the mother about five years later. To Mr. Schiller and wife ten children have been born, seven of whom are living.

He was a Private in Captain Andrew Fink's Company, Enrolled Missouri Militia in 1864. He was on the Union side. Catharina Bernhardine Kriege and John Schiller had the following children:

Bernhard Beckmann (son of Casper Beckmann and Mary Maune) was born on 30 September 1839 in Germany. He died on 31 January 1900 in Missouri. Bernhard Beckmann, merchant, was born in Germany in 1839, and is the son of Casper and Mary (Maune) Beckmann, both of whom were natives of Germany. The father died when Bernhard was but nine weeks old, and in 1850, with his mother and twin sister, our subject immigrated to America, landing at New Orleans. From that city they went immediately to St. Louis, and two days later removed to Union, Franklin County. Here they took up their residence on a farm two miles from that town. The mother died in 1859. Bernhard remained on the farm for five years, and then located in St. Louis, where, until the breaking out of the late war, he worked at his trade, brick making. In 1861 he enlisted in Company A, First Regiment of Missouri Infantry, and served three months. He then re-enlisted for three years, joining Company M, of the Second Missouri Light Artillery. He was mustered out at St. Louis, October 6, 1863, and then again enlisted, this time in Company B, of the Forty-seventh Missouri Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He then returned to St. Louis, and remained there three years, after which he removed to Union and opened a brickyard. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Sophia Kriege, a native of Franklin County, born in 1846, and died in 1878. To them were born two children, Katie and Edward, both deceased. One year previous to the death of his wife Mr. Beckmann abandoned brick making and engaged in the saloon business. In 1880 he was united in marriage to Napoleon Berger, a native of Germany. In February, 1887, he engaged in his present business, and now carries on a general merchandise store, keeping for sale dry goods, groceries, hardware, queens ware, glassware, canned goods, cigars, tobacco, candies and in fact a general line. Katharine Sophie Kriege and Bernhard Beckmann had the following children:

This is the story of the Spanish Flu Epidemic as told t

o me by my mother, Wilma Doerr who was born March 5, 1900

Wilma was born and raised on a small farm outside Union, Mo. On her 17th birthday, she came into Union and worked for a large shoe factory. She may have caught the flu at the shoe factory, but at the same time, a very serious type of measles was also present. My Mother came down with the flu and measles at the same time.

She was staying with an older sister (Hallie) in Union. Since he was the one and only doctor, Dr. Edward Stierberger was really stretched thin by all the illness. There was nothing he could do in the way of medicine. The sister applied cold, wet sheets to her entire body, night and day and the good doctor came by 3 or 4 times a day to check on her and give further orders. For three nights in a row, he came and spent the night at my Mother's bedside. Since it had been days that he had been able to go to bed, he ordered my aunt to let him sleep an hour at a time and then to wake him up to check on his patient. He slept on a straight chair by the bed. My aunt had a small daughter (Irene) and Dr. Stierberger ordered the child out of the house. When my aunt said she had no one to keep her, the doctor said to take her to a neighbor and tell them to keep her.

Finally at the end of a long week, Wilma's fever broke and she began the road to recovery. When she was finally able to return to her shoe factory work, she went to Dr. Stierberger to start paying her bill. He asked how much she was making at her job which $2.00 or $3.00 per week. He told her to forget the bill as she needed it more than he. Wilma lived to be nearly 90 years.

She played the saxophone and piano. She did very well at school. Irene spent most of her life working at Bourbeuse Shoe and then Brown Shoe Co. She sewed the upper parts of ladies shoes. Irene was Secretary of the Shoe Workers Union.

 

OBIT FOR IRENE:

She was born July 1, 1915, at Union, the daughter of Martin Hobelmann and his wife Hallie, nee Doerr. Mrs. Dunakin received her education in Union at Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Union High School in 1933. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Sterling Giesing at Immaculate Conception Church, Union. He preceded her in death in January 1972. In June of 1977, she was united in marriage to George Dunakin. He preceded her in death in January 2002. Mrs. Dunakin had been employed at Brown Shoe Company as a stitcher and retired in 1980 after working there over 40 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Daughters of Isabella, the Western Catholic Union and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Hobelmann; her sister-in-law, Louise Hobelmann; one daughter-in-law, Janice Giesing; and one son-in-law, Kim Hill. Mrs. Dunakin is survived by two sons, Martin Giesing and Richard Giesing, both of Union; one daughter, Mary Hill, Le High Acres, Florida.; one stepdaughter, Brenda Smith, Portland, Ore.; one stepson, George Dunakin, Springfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six step grand children; other relatives and many friends. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 25, at Immaculate Conception Church, Union, with the Rev. Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment was in the Immaculate Conception Church cemetery. Memorials to the County Seat Senior Center Building Fund or Masses are preferred. The Dunakin family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, MO.

 

Irene Dorothy Hobelmann and Sterling Edward Giesing were married on 10 April 1937 in Immaculate Conception Church, Union, MO by Rev. Hubert Pfeil. Sterling Edward Giesing (son of Edward Albert Giesing and Jane P. Townley) was born on 18 April 1910 in Chamois, Osage Co., Missouri. He died from a heart attack at 5:20 a.m. on 20 January 1972 in Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was buried on 22 January 1972 in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri.

 

He attended the Catholic school at Chamois, Missouri. Sterling and his brothers used to jump on to the train to get to school. He wanted to be a professional ball player, but he was hit by a car when he was young and broke his arm, which didn't heal right.

When Sterling was young he worked on the Missouri River building dikes. Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was in a camp on which is now CCC Camp road in the north part of Union, Missouri. The men planted trees in Franklin County. At this time he met Irene Hobelmann.

After his marriage he worked at various jobs. He worked on a farm, shoe factory, and during World War 2 he worked at the ammunition plant in St. Louis, Missouri and as a guard on Lock & Dam #25 on the Mississippi River near Winfield & Foley, Missouri. He was working as a shoe leather cutter at Wolff Shoe Co. in Union, Missouri at the time of his death.

Sterling belonged to the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. His pastime hobbies were playing his violin and guitar. Also he kept track of the high and low temperature of each day for years, a habit picked up from his days working on the River. He died on 11 January 2002 in Grandview Healthcare Center, Washington, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was buried on 14 January 2002 in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was a shoe worker.

 

George R. Dunakin, 83, Union, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at Grandview Healthcare Center, Washington. He was born March 15, 1918, at Sharon, Massachusetts, the son of Pearley A. Dunakin and wife Bertha, nee Capper. Mr. Dunakin received his education in Sharon and graduated from high school there in 1935. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from May 1942 to December 1945. In 1945 he was united in marriage to Dessie Naramore at Nashville, Tennessee, where he was stationed. They made their home in Sharon, Massachusetts. Mr. Dunakin then moved to Salem with International Shoe Company in 1952. He later moved to Union. On June 11, 1977, he was united in marriage to Irene Hobelmann Giesing. He retired from International Shoe in 1980 after 28 years of service. Mr. Dunakin was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Union, and a member of the American Legion Post 297.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1975; two brothers, William Dunakin and Harold Dunakin; and one sister, Hazel Morse. Mr. Dunakin is survived by his wife, Irene, Union; three sons, George Dunakin Jr. and wife Vicki, Springfield, Martin Giesing and Richard Giesing, both of Union; two daughters, Brenda Smith, nee Dunakin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Mary Hill, nee Giesing, Lehigh Acres, Florida; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Monday, January 14, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, followed by a funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Union, with Rev. Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

 

131. Leonard G. Hobelmann (Hallie Helen Doerr-6, Ida Eliza Kriege-5, Friedrich Heinrich-4, Ernst Jakob-3, Evert Cordt-2, Everd Jacob-1) was born on 22 February 1921 in Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He died from a heart attack on 22 April 1976. He was buried on 25 April 1976 in Midlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was also known as Bud. He was a shoe worker and shipping clerk.

 

In Aug 1922 Leonard fell and required five stitches on his head. Leonard attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and Union, Missouri High School. He served in Marines in World War Two in the South Pacific. Leonard received a commendation for risking his life to repair communications during a Japanese attack on Oct 23 and 24, 1942 in the Solomon Islands.

 

Leonard G. Hobelmann and Louise Grafferth were married on 26 January 1946 in Immaculate Conception Church, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. Louise Grafferth (daughter of William E. Grafferth and Lydia Maschmann) was born on 27 September 1921. She died from complications from diabetes on 11 October 1999 in Franklin Co., Missouri. She was buried on 13 October 1999 in Midlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. She was a legal secretary.

 

Louise Hobelmann, 78, formerly of Union, died Monday, October 11, 1999. She was born September 27, 1921 in Washington, the daughter of the late William E. Grafferth and wife Lydia, nee Maschmann. She attended school in New Haven and graduated from Union High School in 1939. She also was a graduate of Miss Hickey's Business School, St. Louis, Missouri. On January 26, 1946, she was united in marriage to Leonard Hobelmann. They made their home in Union. Two children were born to this marriage.

 

Mrs. Hobelmann worked as a secretary for various judges in the Franklin county court system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard "Bud" Hobelmann, April 22, 1976. Robert J. Drew, 82, Union, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, in Washington. Mr. Drew was born March 3, 1922, in Princeton, Ind., the son of Ancle Drew and wife Pearl, nee Marshall.

On Aug. 7, 1945, he was united in marriage to Doris Lister. He was a member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Union, a 50-year member of the Florissant Masonic Lodge and Union American Legion Post 297. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Trenton. Mr. Drew worked for Western Union Telegraph Company for 35 years. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Doris Greiwe, Dorothy Wallis and June Nolte. He is survived by his wife; one son, James Drew and wife Kathy, Liberty; one daughter, Diane Bunker and husband Fred, Tyler, Texas; five grandchildren, Saran Bunker and Donna Alfred, Tyler, Texas, Logan, Jordon and Jameson Drew, Liberty; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 17, at First Presbyterian Church in Union with the Rev. Linda Maconochie officiating. Interment was in Zion Cemetery in Union. Doris Lister and Robert J. Drew had the following children:

He was Post commander and chaplain. Also belongs to Masonic Lodge since 1954 and is past president of Union Jaycees and the Eastern Starr. He also had a hand in organizing the Union Girls Softball Association, the Rainbow Activity Center, where he served as a board member and the Autumn Hill State School in Union, Missouri.
