George enrolled in 54th Regiment Missouri Militia, Company B at Washington, Missouri on September 30, 1864 as a private and ordered into service October 1, 1864 by Captain Dettmar. George was relieved from duty on Nov 14, 1864 by Col. Gale. He was in the Union Army. Started a hotel and saloon in Union, Mo. in the years 1875-1877 and ran it until his death. The building was across from the Courthouse on the North side. Also was chief executive officer of Union Municipal Township, which was like a Sheriff.

3. Mathias Hobelmann (David-1) was born on 17 October 1848 in Holthausen (Wegenholdenhause) Hanover, Germany. He died on 21 March 1900 in Dutzow, Warren Co., Missouri. He was also known as Martin. He was buried in St. Vincent Cemetery Dutzow, Warren Co., Missouri.
 
Martin Hobelmann was reared by his Uncle Martin (Matthias) Hellmann after his father died. Martin stayed on the Hellmann farm until the age of twenty-eight. During the winters when he was young he attended the district school. When the opportunity arose, he went into the mercantile business, first at Clover Bottom in 1877 to 1880 and then to Dutzow, Mo. in 1881. In 1882 Martin was appointed to Postmaster of Dutzow, which he held until his death in 1900. Even though he voted Democratic, he served two Republican and two Democratic administrations. He belonged to St. Vincent's Catholic Church and also was a member of the Catholic Knights of America and a member of St. Francis Lodge No. 454 of which he was a trustee.
This side of family changed the name from Hobelmann to Hobelman during World War One due to hatred of anyone with a German sounding name. Hobelman sounded more like an English name.
 
Mathias Hobelmann and Mary Elizabeth Berend were married on 11 January 1881 in St. Paul's Catholic Church, Berger, Franklin Co., MO. by Rev. Hilarius Scholz. In 1940 Tony Hobelman and his business partner Linus Glosemeyer (died March 2005) bought a grocery store from Mr. Pilger. It is located at 19 Concord Hill Road just north of Highway 94 at Peer, Mo. in Warren County, Mo. Tony sold out his interest in 1947 and moved to Kansas City. Linus Glosemeyer is still running the store in year 2000.

David (Gim) graduated from Senn High School in 1913. In 1939 he was instrumental in the organizing of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary at Chicago. David became the first member and the first Commander of Division 1, Flotilla 3. From 1942 until his death he served as Chief Training Officer. He joined the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club in 1934 and was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Also in 1934 he founded and edited the SQUALL paper, which he continued for eleven years to the day of his death. In 1943 he organized THE SPREADER, the official LMYA monthly publication, which he edited with his usual skill until he died. In 1943 David was elected Commodore of Corinthian Yacht Club. He was also a member of Escanaba, Racine, Michigan City, Waukegan, Chicago, Columbia, Southern Shore and the Great Lakes Cruising Club. On December 9, 1944, David was awarded life membership by Columbia Yacht Club. David had a Column in the Old Chicago Evening Post called "On the Rack by D.E.H.", and edited for two years the "Lake Michigan Yachting News", afterwards changed to the "Yachtman". In 1941 he had another column on Yachting in the Chicago Daily Times. He was also a constant contributor of articles to the Chicago Daily News and to the magazine "Yachting".

She was buried on 5 September 1962 in St. Mary's Cemetery (Moselle), Villa Ridge, Franklin Co., Missouri.
 
Josephine E. Otten passed away on Sept 3, 1962 at St. Francis Hospital, Washington, Missouri.
She was born to the union of Fritz and Mary Bauer Hobelmann.
She was married to John Otten, who preceded her in death. Children are Mrs. Henry Maupin, Ed Otten, Bill Otten, Henry Otten, all of St. Clair; Mrs. George Hagedorn of Villa Ridge and Mrs. Ed Feltmann of Creve Coeur, MO. Two daughters preceded her in death.
Services were held Wednesday morning, September 5 at 9 a.m. from St. Mary's church, Moselle, MO with interment in the church cemetery.

She died from acute rheumatic fever on 9 February 1934 in St. Francis Hospital, Washington, Franklin Co., Missouri. She was buried on 12 February 1934 in St. Mary's Cemetery (Moselle), Villa Ridge, Franklin Co., Missouri. Ella Otten, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Otten of Moselle, MO, was born in that little town on July 1, 1920 and passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Washington, MO Friday February 9 at 5:00 a.m., having reached the age of 13 years, 7 months and 8 days. She was a student in St. Mary's Catholic school at Moselle and was to have graduated from the eighth grade this spring. About two weeks before her death, she became ill and was taken to the hospital where she underwent an operation. However, it did not prove of benefit to her and although everything in medical aid was used, Our Heavenly Father called her to her Eternal Home. Since the Sunday previous to her death, the child was resigned to the Will of God and said she knew she was not going to get well and told members of the family she was not afraid to die. That her little soul may rest in peace, was the prayer offered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at churches in this vicinity last Sunday. Funeral services were held by Father Meler of St. Mary's church in Moselle Monday morning at 9:00 o'clock, with interment in the church cemetery.
Besides her parents, she is survived by four brothers, Fred, Edward, Henry and William; three sisters, Martha and Julia Otten and Mrs. Gertrude Maupin; many other relatives and a host of friends.
 
8. Martin Bernard Hobelmann (George Frederick-2, David-1) was born on 1 September 1879 in Detmold, Franklin Co., Missouri. He died from coronary occlusion on 22 June 1947 in Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was buried on 25 June 1947 in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was a shoe worker.
 
In 1913 Martin went to Evans, Iowa to run a railroad engine for an "orange peel". In 1915 Martin was manager of Union Bottling Works which made soda and mineral water. Martin worked for the Rock Island Railroad, also was a shoe worker. He liked to fish.
 
Martin Bernard Hobelmann and Hallie Helen Doerr were married on 30 June 1914 in St. Mary's Church, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri by Berard Jehnle OFM. Hallie Helen Doerr (daughter of Henry Gerhart Doerr and Ida Eliza Kriege) was born on 8 May 1895 in area near Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. She died on 14 January 1997 in Sunset Nursing Home Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. She was buried in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri.
 
She went to North Bend School near Union, Mo. Hallie had pneumonia in July 1911 and bedfast for 11 days.
Hallie was a seamtress before she got married. Hallie worked at Hilkmeyer's Dry Goods store in Union as a young woman. She made home made soap which she used when she washed clothes. Had a big garden each year. Hallie belonged to Garden Club, Western Catholic Union, Daughters of Isabella and other organizations. Hallie was baptized in the Catholic Faith on May 17, 1914 at the Church of the Holy Ghost at 1911 North Taylor Ave. in St. Louis, Missouri by Father John Rothensteiner and her sponsor was Lena Ostermann. She was married to Martin Hobelmann on June 30, 1914 at St. Mary's Church at Union, Missouri by Rev. Berard Jehnle OFM. Martin Bernard Hobelmann and Hallie Helen Doerr had the following children:

Bill was of the Catholic faith and lifelong member of St. Clare Catholic Church. He loved country music and was a member of the Country Music Club of Sullivan and also a member of the St. Clair Senior Citizens Center.
As a young man, he began his working career at St. Clair International Shoe Company in St. Clair, working there as a shoe cutter for 21 years. He was later employed as a carpenter for Swan Construction Company, retiring in 1975.
Bill was an outdoorsman at heart and was happiest when he was active outside. He liked to cut wood and go hunting and fishing, especially when the boys were with him. He was an outgoing, fun-loving man and always had a tale to tell. Dancing was another of his favorite pastimes and in recent years, he enjoyed riding his four-wheeler. He was an avid baseball fan and even after his sight failed him and he couldn't watch the games, he listened to them with enthusiasm.

She played the saxophone and piano. She did very well at school. Irene spent most of her life working at Bourbeuse Shoe and then Brown Shoe Co. She sewed the upper parts of ladies shoes. Irene was Secretary of the Shoe Workers Union.

She was born July 1, 1915, at Union, the daughter of Martin Hobelmann and his wife Hallie, nee Doerr. Mrs. Dunakin received her education in Union at Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Union High School in 1933. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Sterling Giesing at Immaculate Conception Church, Union. He preceded her in death in January 1972. In June of 1977, she was united in marriage to George Dunakin. He preceded her in death in January 2002. Mrs. Dunakin had been employed at Brown Shoe Company as a stitcher and retired in 1980 after working there over 40 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Daughters of Isabella, the Western Catholic Union and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Hobelmann; her sister-in-law, Louise Hobelmann; one daughter-in-law, Janice Giesing; and one son-in-law, Kim Hill. Mrs. Dunakin is survived by two sons, Martin Giesing and Richard Giesing, both of Union; one daughter, Mary Hill, Le High Acres, Florida.; one stepdaughter, Brenda Smith, Portland, Ore.; one stepson, George Dunakin, Springfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six step grand children; other relatives and many friends. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 25, at Immaculate Conception Church, Union, with the Rev. Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment was in the Immaculate Conception Church cemetery. Memorials to the County Seat Senior Center Building Fund or Masses are preferred. The Dunakin family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, MO.
 
Irene Dorothy Hobelmann and Sterling Edward Giesing were married on 10 April 1937 in Immaculate Conception Church, Union, MO by Rev. Hubert Pfeil. Sterling Edward Giesing (son of Edward Albert Giesing and Jane P. Townley) was born on 18 April 1910 in Chamois, Osage Co., Missouri. He died from a heart attack at 5:20 a.m. on 20 January 1972 in Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was buried on 22 January 1972 in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri.
 
He attended the Catholic school at Chamois, Missouri. Sterling and his brothers used to jump on to the train to get to school. He wanted to be a professional ball player, but he was hit by a car when he was young and broke his arm, which didn't heal right.
When Sterling was young he worked on the Missouri River building dikes. Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was in a camp on which is now CCC Camp road in the north part of Union, Missouri. The men planted trees in Franklin County. At this time he met Irene Hobelmann.
After his marriage he worked at various jobs. He worked on a farm, shoe factory, and during World War 2 he worked at the ammunition plant in St. Louis, Missouri and as a guard on Lock & Dam #25 on the Mississippi River near Winfield & Foley, Missouri. He was working as a shoe leather cutter at Wolff Shoe Co. in Union, Missouri at the time of his death.
Sterling belonged to the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. His pastime hobbies were playing his violin and guitar. Also he kept track of the high and low temperature of each day for years, a habit picked up from his days working on the River. He died on 11 January 2002 in Grandview Healthcare Center, Washington, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was buried on 14 January 2002 in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was a shoe worker.
 
George R. Dunakin, 83, Union, died Friday, January 11, 2002, at Grandview Healthcare Center, Washington. He was born March 15, 1918, at Sharon, Massachusetts, the son of Pearley A. Dunakin and wife Bertha, nee Capper. Mr. Dunakin received his education in Sharon and graduated from high school there in 1935. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from May 1942 to December 1945. In 1945 he was united in marriage to Dessie Naramore at Nashville, Tennessee, where he was stationed. They made their home in Sharon, Massachusetts. Mr. Dunakin then moved to Salem with International Shoe Company in 1952. He later moved to Union. On June 11, 1977, he was united in marriage to Irene Hobelmann Giesing. He retired from International Shoe in 1980 after 28 years of service. Mr. Dunakin was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Union, and a member of the American Legion Post 297.
He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1975; two brothers, William Dunakin and Harold Dunakin; and one sister, Hazel Morse. Mr. Dunakin is survived by his wife, Irene, Union; three sons, George Dunakin Jr. and wife Vicki, Springfield, Martin Giesing and Richard Giesing, both of Union; two daughters, Brenda Smith, nee Dunakin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Mary Hill, nee Giesing, Lehigh Acres, Florida; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Monday, January 14, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, followed by a funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Union, with Rev. Matthew Mitas officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
 
38. Leonard G. Hobelmann (Martin Bernard-3, George Frederick-2, David-1) was born on 22 February 1921 in Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He died from a heart attack on 22 April 1976. He was buried on 25 April 1976 in Midlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. He was also known as Bud. He was a shoe worker and shipping clerk.
 
In Aug 1922 Leonard fell and required five stitches on his head. Leonard attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and Union, Missouri High School. He served in Marines in World War Two in the South Pacific. Leonard received a commendation for risking his life to repair communications during a Japanese attack on Oct 23 and 24, 1942 in the Solomon Islands.
 
Leonard G. Hobelmann and Louise Grafferth were married on 26 January 1946 in Immaculate Conception Church, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. Louise Grafferth (daughter of William E. Grafferth and Lydia Maschmann) was born on 27 September 1921. She died from complications from diabetes on 11 October 1999 in Franklin Co., Missouri. She was buried on 13 October 1999 in Midlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. She was a legal secretary.
 
Louise Hobelmann, 78, formerly of Union, died Monday, October 11, 1999. She was born September 27, 1921 in Washington, the daughter of the late William E. Grafferth and wife Lydia, nee Maschmann. She attended school in New Haven and graduated from Union High School in 1939. She also was a graduate of Miss Hickey's Business School, St. Louis, Missouri. On January 26, 1946, she was united in marriage to Leonard Hobelmann. They made their home in Union. Two children were born to this marriage.
 
Mrs. Hobelmann worked as a secretary for various judges in the Franklin county court system. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard "Bud" Hobelmann, April 22, 1976. Mrs. Hobelmann is survived by one daughter, Tanya Paul and husband Gerald, Bourbon; one son, Greg Hobelmann and wife Connie of Gentry, Arkansas; two grandchildren, April and Andrew Hobelmann; one sister-in-law, Irene Dunakin and husband George, Union; special friend Gail and Dallas Christian, Bourbon; and Jean and Allen Martin, Sullivan; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 13, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union with Rev. Tom Haller officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Cemetery, Union, Missouri. Mrs. Hobelmann received schooling at Jeffriesburg. On February 26, 1938, she was united in marriage to Anton "Tony" Hobelmann. Mrs. Hobelmann was employed at the Carmo Shoe Company, Union, for more than 30 years. She retired in 1981.
Mrs. Hobelmann was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anton Hobelmann, on December 22, 1987; two sisters, Nelda Grinnip and Freda Henderson; and three brothers, Elmer Fechtler, Emil Fechtler and Ervin Fechtler. She is survived by one son, Larry Hobelmann and wife Susan, St. Charles; one daughter, Jeanette Lawrence and husband Paul, Sullivan; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Mrs. VanLeer was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Moselle, the daughter of George Hobelmann and wife Eleanor, nee Bay. She was united in marriage Jan. 18, 1936, to Robert Woodrow VanLeer. Mrs. VanLeer was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, St. Clair. She was a 46-year member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, St. Clair Chapter 96. Mrs. VanLeer was a member of the St. Clair Temple Association and had served as secretary for 36 years. She was employed as a repairer for Carmo Shoe and Deb Shoe Companies.
Mrs. VanLeer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Anton Hobelmann, George Hobelmann and Eugene Hobelmann; and three sisters, Mable Gay, Frances Herndon and Mary VanLeer. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth VanLeer and wife Betty, Glendale, Ariz., and Robert VanLeer Jr. and wife Janet, St. Clair; one daughter, Phyllis Wideman and husband Bob, St. Clair; one sister, Leona Brown, St. Clair; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 11, at St. John United Church of Christ, St. Clair, with the Rev. Mary Albert officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union.

Leona Carolyn Brown, 88, St. Clair, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, in St. Clair. Mrs. Brown, the daughter of George Hobelmann and wife Eleanor, nee Bay, was born Aug. 27, 1917, in St. Mary's.
 
She was united in marriage to Alvin "Dick" Roy Brown Nov. 14, 1933. Mrs. Brown was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker. She also cooked for the St. Clair Public School District for a few years.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ronald "Ronnie" Roy Brown; three brothers, Anton Hobelmann, George Hobelmann and Eugene Hobelmann; four sisters, Mable Gay, Frances Herndon, Mary Van Leer and Regina Van Leer; one grandson, Jeff Mueller; one great-great-grandaughter, Hailey Rettinghaus; and one son-in-law, Frank Mueller.
 
She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Mueller King and husband Charlie, St. Clair; one granddaughter, Linda McMillen and husband Danny, Peoria, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Adrianne Rettinghaus and husband Jason, Union; Sara Pelikan and husband Eddie, Wentzville, and Erica McMillen, Peoria, Ill., one great-great-grandchilld, Gabrielle Rettinghaus, Union; two sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
 
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 28, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, with the Rev. Ben Kingston officiating. Burial was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union. Ronnie is survived by his mother, Leona Brown, St. Clair; one sister, Dorothy Mueller King and husband Charlie, St. Clair; one aunt, Regina "Sis" VanLeer, St. Clair; one niece, Linda McMillen and husband Danny, Peoria, Illinois; three great-nieces, Adrianne Rettinghaus and husband Jason, Union, Sara McMillen and Erica McMillen, both of Peoria, Illinois; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his father, Ronnie was preceded in death by his nephew, Jeff Mueller.
Ronnie was of the Baptist faith and member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in St. Clair.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair with Reverend Tom Smith officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens in Union. Mabel Helen Gay, 80, St. Clair, died at her home on Saturday, February 19, 2000. Mabel was born in Union on March 21, 1919, daughter of George H. Hobelmann and Eleanor Hobelmann, nee Bay. On January 18, 1936 she married Ben Jake Gay and they had three children. She is survived by one son, David E. Gay and wife Marsha, St. Charles County; two daughters, Rose M. Landing and husband Joseph, Union and Peggy Ann Hempelmann and husband DeWayne, Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren, David Mark Gay, Leigh Ann Hoffmeister and husband Craig, Cindy George and husband Matt, Patti Kaase and husband Larkie and Tracy Landing; two sisters, Regina VanLeer, St. Clair and Leona Brown, St. Clair; eight great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Ben J. Gay; three brothers, Gene, Anton and George Hobelmann; and two sisters, Mary VanLeer and Frances Herndon. Mable was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the Vintage Club in St. Clair. She had lived in the St. Clair area throughout most her life. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 23 at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair with Pastor Craig Fenske officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Clair.

He served his country as a sergeant in the Missouri National Guard, receiving his honorable discharge on November 22, 1968, after more than 20 years of service. He owned and operated Otten Texaco on North Main Street in St. Clair for about 35 years. Mr. Otten was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred Otten. He is survived by his son, Steve Otten, Catawissa; one grandson, Josh Otten; his daughter-in-law, Mary Otten, Union; aunts; uncles; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Friday, September 27, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, with Reverend Don Covington officiating. Interment was in St. Clare Catholic Cemetery, St. Clair. On Sept. 9, 1972, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Lause at St. Mary's Church in Villa Ridge. Mrs. Lause was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and Western Catholic Union. She was preceded in death by her father, George Hagedorn.
 
Mrs. Lause is survived by her mother, Julia Hagedorn, Villa Ridge; her husband, Kenneth Lause, Union; three sons, Devin Lause and wife Krista, Augusta, Ben Lause and wife Leslie, Beaufort, and Jared "J.J." Mrs. Fisher worked for Paramount Cap Company in Gerald. She later helped baby sit many neighborhood children. She was a member of the Gerald Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7268 Ladies Auxiliary.
 
Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by four sons, Richard Fisher and wife Julia, Georgia state, Daniel Fisher and wife Trevia, Steven Fisher and wife Nancy, all of Gerald, and Mark Fisher and wife Theresa, Rosebud; two daughters, Diane Angell and husband Norman, Gerald, Pamela Bloch and husband Horst, Hermann; one brother, Wilbert Aytes, Texas state; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Mr. Benton received his education in St. Clair. He served his country in the U.S. Army overseas during World War II. He received two Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct medal.
Following his military service he was employed at the Ford Motor Company for 30 years, retiring in 1979. On September 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Melton. They made their home at St. Clair until 1979 when they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stella and Charles Benton; five brothers, Ellis, Buster, Wilbur, Elmer and Charles Jr.; two sisters, Anna Nevills and Josephine Barton.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Benton, Phoenix, Arizona; one daughter, Karen Williams, Phoenix, Arizona; one son, James Benton, Jr., Joplin; three sisters, Marie Barton and Laura Stahlman, both of St. Clair, and Blanche George, Pensacola, Florida; three grandsons, Kevin, Craig and Steve Reeves; three granddaughters, Lisa, Misty and Amanda Benton; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 22, at Glendale Mortuary, Glendale, Arizona. Interment followed at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. The Benton family was served by Glendale Mortuary, Glendale, Arizona. Evelyn Melton and James Washington Benton Sr. had the following children:
